I’ve been much too serious lately. I’ll blame it on winter’s enduring stronghold in the Midwest (give it up, winter…we’ve had it up to our eyeballs with your silly shenanigans…but, then again, we haven’t been dealing with Nor’easters!). In an effort to break the bonds of snow, ice, cloudiness, and morning frost on the windshields, I will cheer us all up with another epic poem about my car, Louie. If you’ve never read the introductory story, it’s in the archives, from July of 2017.
A little Hyundai, Louie,
Is my fine and trusted steed.
He’s always at the ready
For any adventuring need.
The only place we’ve traveled
Since our trip to the east coast,
Was a quick jaunt to Detroit
(about which none can boast!).
Unless you count the eclipse,
Which called us slightly south.
But it wasn’t much for Louie;
He’s quite down-in-the-mouth.
He sought another voyage
Deserving of a shark
So we packed him to the gills,
Then did, ourselves, embark.
We headed to the northwest,
Through farm and prairie states
On our way to Minnesota,
Home of 10,000 lakes.
Louie was a trooper
(though longing for sea water),
He sailed smooth and steady,
Right to the home of my daughter.
The grandkids gave us welcome,
Said, “Louie, job well done!”
And Louie answered heartily,
“Our odyssey’s just begun!”
We tarried in this district
Of piled up ice and snow
‘Til memories of commitments,
Caused homeward winds to blow.
Louie stood at attention,
He’d turned his tail to flee.
He said this northern outpost
Was not his cup of tea.
Our southbound journey started,
With bittersweet good-byes.
Let’s get this venture moving,
While sun is in our eyes.
And so my faithful Louie
Went forth for me again
With sharky eyes attentive,
And a flipping of his fin.
He did his job reliably,
A traveler through and through.
We flew by all the slower folks
As sharks will often do!
(It’s why I love my Louie.
He’s not like other sharks.
He’s kind and good and faithful,
with frequent mischievous sparks.
He longs to hit the highway,
Adventure is the lure.
When Louie’s feeling downcast,
An exploit is the cure!
He’s up for any challenge,
He loves the open road.
He goes wherever I ask him to,
He’s not a selfish toad.)
So, with sure and calm reliance,
Our homeland we did reach.
But then he turned and said to me,
“Next time, let’s hit the beach!”
